Secular Funeral Music
With so many choices available, turning to traditional secular songs for funerals can make things less stressful.
What we define as traditional songs for funerals are those pieces that don’t easily fall into categories such as classical and spiritual. These songs might be those described as being part of the great American songbook or they may be referred to simply as “classics”. They are familiar to most of us and almost always evoke some type of memory.
Examples include Enigma Variations, O Danny Boy, Send in the Clowns, The Wind Beneath My Wings, and others.
Religious Funeral Music
Funeral songs and music are intended to honor the deceased and bring comfort to those who are grieving. For many, spiritual songs for funerals offer exactly that combination. That is particularly true for those who led their lives in a highly spiritual or religious way. Historically, spiritual songs for funerals were confined to hymns that would be sung primarily during religious services. These days, the variety of available music is much broader and includes subgenres such as contemporary Christian music. In fact, there are many beautiful music selections that have their basis in religious values but are not necessarily “church” songs.
Examples include Ave Maria, Amazing Grace, Simple Gifts, Battle Hymn, Saved by Grace, and others.
